Dealing With A Crack In Your Windshield Caused By Road Debris

One of the most common ways for a windshield to get damaged is from debris on the road that is kicked up by another vehicle. Small rocks or stones on the road can be picked up in the tread of a tire and then thrown free as the tire spins. The result is a projectile with enough force to chip or crack the windshield of the car behind them and there is no one who is really at fault. What do you do if it happens to you?

Check Your Insurance

If you are on the road and a stone is thrown up and hits the windshield of your car, check your insurance policy and see if you have coverage for glass breakage and what the deductible is for it. Often people have coverage on their insurance but the deductible they have to pay is more than the cost of the replacement windshield. Make sure you know what your deductible is and if there are limitations on the glass or where it is installed at. Some policies cover the glass but you have to get factory glass or it has to be installed in the shop rather than a mobile installation. Knowing what your insurance will cover can save you a lot of trouble down the road.

Mobile Glass Replacement

For people with busy work schedules or other commitments that make it hard to get the time free to bring your car in for windshield replacement, many companies have a solution for you. Mobile glass installation is very common now and is a great time-saving option. The process is pretty simple. You make the appointment and park your car away from other vehicles in the lot. The installer will come and replace the glass in the lot parking lot or whatever location you desire without you having to take time away from work or other activities. If you are going to have this done at work, be sure to check with your employer to ensure they allow the work in the parking lot or on the property.

No Insurance Coverage, No Problem

What if you don't have insurance coverage for glass damage? You can still use a mobile glass installer and get the windshield changed the same way. Most glass companies will give you the price of the glass and the installation then allow you to pay for it with a credit card before they come out and do the work. Modern cars may have glass that will cost upwards of 3 or 4 hundred dollars but an older car may only cost you 1 or 2 hundred dollars. There are a lot of variables that go into the price so check with the glass dealer to get an accurate price for your car.
